Christina, I met you briefly at the Chicago BP event last spring and enjoyed listening to your responses to a variety of baseball questions. I’ve been following you on Twitter and reading your work since then. This post is a treat.

Thank you, not only for sharing so much of yourself, but also for reminding me to reflect on the many people who’ve made an impact on me over the last decade.

A wonderful post, Christina. It’s been 15 years since my first visit to the doctor who helped me begin my new life. I could write my own post very much like yours about the many people who inspired me, stood with me and in so many ways helped me build the happy life I now have. I owe them more than I can begin to count and that’s why I try to pay it forward every chance I have.

Thanks again for a wonderful post and a great blog, and for being a great inspiration to me and to us.

I remember the 2003 phone call. I regret that my friendship wasn’t clear enough to you that you worried about the possible range of reactions short of full support and that you were unnecessarily anxious about it. The announcement was resultingly drawn out enough that I had time to think “Oh, Chris is about to tell me that he’s coming out of the closet, and that explains why he didn’t want me to set him up with Ruth after the Super Bowl party. My, I’m oblivious.” So oblivious that even with that lead-up, I was surprised by the actual announcement, though I hope I was supportive. I remember the first time Julia and I took a nervous Christina to dinner in Tyson’s shortly thereafter, watching Julia coach you on subtleties that I never had to consider, and thinking how hard it must be to learn a whole new set of decades worth of social cues and signals on top of all of the other concerns from a shift. Given your field, and given the remarkable difference between 2002 and 2012, your decision was one of the bravest I’ve ever seen. I’m proud to have you as a friend, and happy to see Christina recover the droll confidence that “Chris” exuded.

Oh, yeah…the stack of must-reads. I feel like mine never, ever, ever gets any smaller. For every book I finish, it seems I add a dozen. Now Opening Day is rapidly approaching, and baseball is going to cut into my reading time…not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Sounds good to me; as a wee beastie I loved “Washing of the Spears” in part because it taught me so much about Zulu and Bantu languages. If I dig low enough into my stack of must-reads, I’ll have to check him out.
